Arthritis

Living a healthy life with a chronic condition is possible, but can be a challenge for some individuals. Chronic diseases include arthritis, asthma, heart disease, diabetes, bronchitis, and emphysema, to name but a few. The symptoms of chronic disease vary in both nature and intensity, and may include shortness of breath, pain, fatigue, and emotional distress, among others.
Staff members of Central Utah Public Health Department (CUPHD) were trained to conduct a six-week course that teaches ways to live a healthy life with chronic conditions. This course was developed by researchers at Stanford University and is offered internationally as well as in the states. Within Utah, Central Health District is among the first areas to offer it.
The course begins with general information about chronic diseases and how they affect us, then teaches skills to manage these symptoms. Some of these skills include muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, communication skills, exercise habits, proper nutrition, managing pain, and making an action plan.
